BASIC
OXYGEN FURNACE REFRACTORIES
The Basic Oxygen Furnace
(BOF), is a tiltable vessel lined with refractories such
as magnesia carbon brick. The main function of the BOF
is to decarburise the hot metal using pure oxygen gas. |

BASIC MAGNESITE BRICK
Basic Magnesite Brick is a high performance
refractory based on specially selected high purity seawater
magnesite with additional carbon content to improve
slag resistance. This quality is specifically designed
for use in basic oxygen furnaces and other arduous operating
environments in the steelmaking industry.

ELECTRIC
ARC FURNACE REFRACTORIES
Electric furnaces are
classified as arc furnaces or induction furnaces, according
to the heating method. The arc furnace is used far more
extensively for steelmaking because its capacity is large
and production efficiency is high. |

MAGNESIA CARBON
BRICK
Magnesia-Carbon Brick
is resin-bonded and made with a high proportion of fused
grain magnesite for very high erosion and slag resistance.
It offers good oxidation resistance due to use of high
purity flake graphite. Uses include Electric Arc Furnace
Sidewalls, hotspots and coldspots, and ladle furnace slag
lines. |

MA –
Magnesia Carbon Brick is formulated for extremely high
wear areas in ladle slaglines. It is manufactured with
very high purity, large crystal size and 2/1 lime / silica
ratio Magnesia, high purity Graphite and Antioxidants.
MC - Magnesia Carbon Brick is formulated for high wear
areas in Ladle and Electric Arc Furnace Slaglines. It
is manufactured with very high purity, extra large crystal
size fused magnesia with a 2/1 lime / silica ratio, high
purity Graphite and Antioxidants.
ME – Magnesia Carbon Brick is formulated for high
wear areas in the electric arc furnaces and ladle slaglines.
It is manufactured with very high purity, large crystal
size and 100% (96 Grade) electro fused Magnesia, high
purity Graphite and Antioxidants.

ARGON-OXYGEN
DECARBURISATION (AOD) AND FIRED MAGNESIA / DOLOMITE REFRACTORIES
More than 30 years ago,
most AOD Linings were constructed with Magnesia Chrome
refractories. Over time the AOD linings were switched
to Fired Dolomite and Fired Magnesia Enriched Dolomite.
Today, virtually all AOD Linings are now constructed with
these refractories.
The switch to Fired
Dolomite and Fired Magnesia Enriched Dolomite has reduced
refractory cost and improved Stainless Steel quality.
After AOD operators switched from Magnesia Chrome refractories
to Dolomite refractories, AOD Lining designs have evolved
over the years, as well. Now, many lining design use three
grades of dolomite; resin bonded, fired dolomite and fired
magnesia enriched dolomite. Linings are also zoned by
thickness.

Computer Controlled Firing and Mixing

AOD operators
have been working to extend lining life. As such, Magnesia
Enriched Dolomite was placed in the high wear areas of
the Lining. Slaglines and Tuyere pads have been upgraded
as well as certain sidewall areas.
About 8 to 10 years ago, the Chinese
refractory industry began to export to industrialized
nations around the world. One of the refractory products
that was exported was Fired Magnesia Dolomite. Initially,
Magnesia Dolomite was only exported from China to the
Asian market primarily to Japan and Korea. Performance
was very promising.
Over the last several years, Chinese
Refractory companies began to look outside the Asian market
to Europe and North America. Three years ago McKeown International
came to an agreement with a major Chinese Refractory Manufacturer
of Fired Magnesia Dolomite to market the product in Europe
and North America.
McKeown is involved in all phases of
the production, quality control and marketing. The Fired
Magnesia Dolomite is made to very stringent McKeown specifications.
The specifications include physical properties, chemical
analysis, sizing ranges and packaging. |

McKeown
also maintains two permanent Offices in China. These offices
are staffed with five full time engineers. The primary
duty of the McKeown China office is to provide quality
control supervision in the manufacturer’s plant
including in process and final inspection. McKeown engineers
must approve and sign off on every order before shipment.
Periodically, McKeown engineers send product samples to
an independent laboratory to confirm the manufacturer’s
data. |

ULTRADOL FIRED
MAGNESIA / DOLOMITE BRICK
McKeown Ultradol Brick
is manufactured from naturally occurring high Magnesia
Dolomite grain. It is fired at high temperature to form
a very low porosity and extremely high density brick.
Ultradol is uniquely suited for use in the high wear areas
of stainless converters and AODs. It is also well suited
for use in the high wear areas of ladle slaglines in steel
plants making silicon deoxidized sheets. |

At the continuous caster, the ladle
and tundish are lined with a powdery monolithic refractory
material which is applied by stamping or gunning. |

JLMAC – Magnesia Alumina Carbon
Brick is formulated for ladle linings. It is manufactured
with very high purity electro fused Magnesia, high purity
Graphite, Alumina and Antioxidants.
MAMC - Alumina Magnesia Carbon Bricks are used in Ladle
Sidewall and Bottom impact areas. It is formulated with
very high purity Alumina and Magnesia. |

High Alumina
Brick
High Alumina refractories are made from
high quality bauxite and corundum with very low impurity
content. They offer great strength at high temperatures
and excellent resistance to abrasion, mechanical wear,
slag corrosion, metal penetration and attacks of various
fluxes. |
